Monkey’s Faith

Slashdot | Did Humans Evolve? No, Say Americans:

“In a 2005 poll covering 33 countries, Americans are the least likely (except for Turkish respondents) to assert that ‘humans developed … from earlier species of animals.’ Iceland, meanwhile, has an 85% acceptance rating for evolution.” The blurb on the site for Science magazine is less circumspect about the findings: “The acceptance of evolution is lower in the United States than in Japan or Europe, largely because of widespread fundamentalism and the politicization of science in the United States.”

Look, so many of the American monkeys do not believe their own eyes, their own reason. They cling to a desperate hope that their frail sad existence has some purpose beyond their heritage. They hope that their existence comes from some divine spark, that they are the chosen of all the animals on this dirt ball.

Well, good for God, at least he still has some followers, blind faith always had a sour taste to me, but its better than hunger.

Great Potential

“Scientist report that introducing only four genes to adult cells is
sufficient to convert them to something that looks and acts remarkably
like an embryonic stem cell. Although some of the details need to be
worked out, if this technique is generally applicable, it may allow the
production of an essentially unlimited supply of stem cells. There is a
subscription-only report, and Ars Technica’s science journal describes the results in some detail for those without subscriptions.”

If this turns out as they say, this could be an amazing step in our capabilities to heal. This bypasses the religious issues that have blocked us for so long. However, the key question is, will we use this knowledge correctly? Well see…

Nasreddin

An anecdotes attributed to a wise Muslim cleric named Nasreddin.

A Perfect Woman

“Why aren’t you married, Master?” a disciple once asked Nasreddin.
Nasreddin replied “All my life I was looking for a perfect woman.”
The young man shook his head and sighed with sympathy, “I guess you haven’t found one yet.”
“No, a few years ago I met a woman who was perfect in every way,” said Nasreddin. “She was kind, beautiful and intelligent. Unfortunately, she was looking for a perfect man.”

Syriana

I am surprised that this film won awards, not because it is of low quality, but due to the nature of its themes. The film itself is extremely well done. Syriana covers too many complex themes to cover in a small blog post, perhaps too many for the film itself. It shows an adage that I have always held, that the demons of mythology and fantasy were not from some other world, they were merely human. Evil is not the work of fallen angels or dark divinity, just the nature of men. Some will find this film a revelation of this truth, others, a blasphemy against the American way, while many will simply think of it as a movie, and forget it.

In one sense, that is all it is, a film, with words and images of actions by people. But this is what so many people forget, the power of words, of images, especially when dictating  actions. Hitler used films to rally his people to war. America has used them for the same reasons. Some films teach hate, while others expose it. This is no different then books, speeches, songs, commercials, or journalism. This is power. This is rhetoric. To not realize this, to not study this, to not understand this; that is what creates the marionettes of the world, with no idea who controls the strings.

Oh yes…this too

How could I forget. Tom begged and begged for me to come back, just so that he could have 10,000,001 friends, so yes, you can find me here too…go a head and friend request, whatever, there are some people who seem to only live here, so the only way to communicate with them is to join them.
