so I updated and played around with my blogger blog today. It is neat, much better than it used to be, I still have more functionality here, but you need to know wordpress to do these things, with blogger its all ajax’d and simple. Mostly I use it to reference this site. Kind of like the theme I am using though.

So, we finally got our power back the other day. I have never been so happy to see light, or feel heat. Was getting a little worried there. And yes, I missed you too Internet.

I am refering here to the HBO series, Carnivale. This is an amazing show, it is well written, has mystery, religion, paranormal powers and carnivale freaks, what more could you ask for? I don’t even want to try to explain or go into details about the show for fear of not doing it justice. Just go get the first and second series from Netflix, or someplace. Yes, I said two seasons, because they canceled it, as they cancel all good shows. I will be waiting for all of these executives in a special place in hell when their time comes. I will make them pay for John Doe, Enterprise, Carnivale, and many others.

Well, I was paid for that small article, not much, but its a start. I also was asked to write another, on some odd subjects dealing with job recruiting, will take some research. Just thought I’d update.
Decided to post on Letters from the Earth tonight, who knows, just was in the mood. Feel free to read it.

Umm…well….yeah, how did this get missed by the popular media? Or maybe I just missed it. I am all for science, genetics, etc. Mankind’s intellect will develop his evolution for good or bad, only time will tell. However, I honestly am a little stuck on this one, not sure what to think. You could say its unnatural, but then I found an article about seahorse males giving birth in place of the females. It’s a strange world we live in, wouldn’t have it any other way.

Used to be that your homepage (the page that loads when your browser opens) was maybe your favorite site, maybe it was email, a news portal, whatever. But over the last few years, more and more companies are creating homepage portals, combining all of your needs with widgets onto one page. Google started it I believe, and it was impressive, used by many including myself, with hundreds of widgets to crowd up the page, email, webcams, weather, games, etc. But Google lacked what a few startups where offering, tabs. Their are so many widgets, that people wanted tabs to organize them. Eventually Google caught up, but each portal has its own little pluses and minuses.
Google
Pros: The most widgets of them all, thousands for all sorts of needs and wants.
Design, it is done in typical Google cleanness, with ajax love.
Finally has tabs, and integrates other Google apps well, such as Notebook, Reader, Calendar.
Cons: (as perceived by me) Cannot share the page, even a tab. This is something I and others would like.
Search widgets are limited and not well implemented.
Initial load is oddly slow and laggy.
Protopages
Pros: Same as above, however, it also allows you to share tabs of your choice.
Even better control over design
Cons: Limited widgets
Shared tabs cannot be edited by others/guests
Netvibes
Pros: Sames as above, except for one big bonus, it has the best implementation of search I have seen, a double click on Enter will put you search term into 20 engines and give you the results, in clean preview windows. I am using Netvibes right now for this feature alone.
Cons: Design is blockier than I would like. And I don’t have as much access to other Google apps. Has an import for rss feeds, but you cannot combine them.
Pageflakes
Pros: Still learning this one, has most of the same features as above, including being able to share pages, and let others edit those shared pages, but they do need to sign in.
Cons: Still needs many more widgets to meet the same functionality of netvibes.
There are other portals, and more that can be said about these. But I am tired….good night.

ok, enough is enough already, this needs to get done. Christ, I’ve said that before haven’t I? Sigh….well, maybe it will stick this time. I am reading a new book called “Writing your dissertation in 15 minutes a day” by Joan Bolker. First chapter, write a thesis journal. So that is what I am doing, in Google Docs. Should show up under Google Thesis Docs to the right, but it isn’t for some reason. My hope is that this book will help. I have read so much, have so many ideas, but doubt my own abilities to accomplish this task. From what I understand, I am not alone in this. If you too are working, or have worked on a thesis or dissertation, feel free to say hi!
